【Types of Gas in Japan】 Differences Between City Gas and Propane Gas

In Japan, there are two types of gas commonly used in households: city gas (natural gas) and propane gas (LP gas). You may have heard these names but aren’t sure what makes them different. In this article, we’ll explain the key differences between city gas and propane gas.

Basic Differences Between City Gas (Natural Gas) and Propane Gas (LP Gas)

・Composition and Properties

City gas is natural gas, primarily composed of methane, while propane gas is a liquefied gas mainly composed of propane and butane. Both gases are originally colorless and odorless, but an odorant is added for safety to help detect leaks.

The two gases also differ in weight. City gas is lighter than air, so if it leaks, it rises and spreads upwards. Therefore, gas leak detectors for city gas are generally installed near the ceiling. Propane gas, on the other hand, is heavier than air and will accumulate near the floor in case of a leak, so detectors for propane gas are installed close to the floor.

・Supply Method and Coverage Area

City gas is supplied to households through underground pipelines. Since laying these pipelines involves enormous costs, city gas is mainly available only in densely populated areas where the infrastructure can be cost-effective.

In contrast, propane gas is delivered in cylinders directly to homes, which allows it to be supplied even in regions without gas pipelines. While city gas is mostly limited to urban areas, propane gas can be supplied throughout almost all of Japan.

・Cost

Propane gas is said to be about twice as expensive as city gas. The higher cost of propane gas is largely due to the delivery process, as gas companies must transport heavy cylinders to each home, adding transportation and labor costs to the price. While city gas requires the initial investment of laying pipelines, once installed, the gas is supplied automatically through the network.

In addition, propane gas has always been under a free-pricing system, long before city gas deregulation. Gas companies have been able to set their own prices, and in some cases, unrelated equipment costs were added to the gas bills. To address these issues, from April 2025, it became mandatory for gas companies to provide a detailed breakdown of their gas charges.

Can You Choose the Type of Gas?

The type of gas available is determined not only by the region but also by the building. The only scenario where you can freely choose the gas type is in a detached house located within a city gas supply area.

In rental properties, the type of gas is generally decided by the property owner or the management company, meaning tenants cannot freely change it. If you wish to switch, you would need the permission of the owner or management company.

Safety Tips for Using Gas

Gas is essential for daily life, but improper use can lead to serious, even fatal, accidents. To prevent such incidents, it is important to follow these safety precautions:

・Ensure Proper Ventilation When Using Gas

When using a gas stove or small water heater, turn on the exhaust fan or open windows for ventilation. Poor ventilation can lead to incomplete combustion, which produces carbon monoxide and may cause poisoning.

・Do Not Leave Gas Appliances Unattended While Cooking

Never leave a gas stove unattended while it is in use. Overheating can cause fires, so always turn off the stove when leaving the kitchen.

・Do Not Use Flames If You Smell Gas

If you detect a gas smell or suspect a leak, do not use any flames. Avoid touching electrical switches or turning on ventilation fans, as sparks could ignite the gas. Open all windows and doors, close the main gas valve or meter valve, and contact your gas company to report the situation. Do not attempt to restart the gas on your own.

Summary

Household gas in Japan comes in two types: city gas and propane gas. The type of gas you can use depends on the region and the building. In rental properties, the property owner decides whether city gas or propane gas is used. If you want to know the type of gas available, it’s best to confirm with the real estate company.
